"It is amazing that this is Kirk MacDonald's first full album as leader! His earlier work is thinly documented mostly as sideman and on numerous C.B.C. broadcasts. But here finally he is with players of his own choosing, playing songs which have meaning for him. The results are both exciting and illuminating. His work with Claude Ranger, Dave Young and others brought him to the attention of musicians and jazz fans as a major talent. His uncompromising honesty with music is probably responsible for a lack of wider recognition. There is a core to one's playing that often can be heard in the earliest notes he plays. This part doesn't change - like character is revealed in the face. The musician is revealed in his tone. The music in this collection, a mix of standards and originals, covers a lot of ground. Descriptions are superfluous....This is beautiful music, you'll love it!" Don Palmer |
